A special afternoon was recently shared in the Abbey Tea Rooms as Augustin Lai (J25) returned to the Valley. He was joined by current St John’s Upper VI pupils, St John’s Housemaster Chris Starkey, and Head of Development Emma Craig.
Together, they reflected on a prayer card featuring a drawing and meditation by Augustin’s father, Jimmy Lai, who remains imprisoned in Hong Kong.
Earlier this month, Augustin’s brother, Sebastien Lai (D13), travelled to Germany to accept an award on his father’s behalf. He was supported by Old Amplefordian families who stood alongside him at this important moment. On the same day, Headmaster Jon Mutton visited St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, where a sketch of the Crucifixion drawn by Jimmy Lai from prison is displayed outside the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
It was a privilege to welcome Augustin back to Ampleforth and to witness the strength of friendship, faith, and community that continues to surround the Lai family. They remain very much in our thoughts and prayers.
