Young OAs host a fantastic Retreat at Ampleforth

Inspired by their formation at Ampleforth, continued service in Lourdes and the impact of Lectio Divina, a group of young Old Amplefordians hosted their second "Listen" Retreat at Ampleforth from 23-25 January 2026. Zara Mayer (M22) and Toni Ward (B13) report.

For the second year in a row, we have been blessed to be able to host a Lectio-inspired “Listen” retreat at Ampleforth, bringing people together to come to know God and to form friendships rooted in Christ.

It offers a time of renewed Faith and friendship with each other and with Christ.  Notably it also offers a time to enjoy, once again, the wonderful local Yorkshire pubs! In the business of life, coming to the valley for this ‘Listen’ retreat gives space for God to fill our cup through community.

Coming for a short weekend to engage in the Benedictine lifestyle the monks faithfully live out everyday reminds each of our hearts, that are so often weary from the world, that silence before the Lord, consistent prayer and many laughs in between is what is important.

The Chileans, who are on mission at the school right now, were very involved in our retreat teaching us how to encounter Jesus in the Scriptures, in the here and now. The Lourdes committee were also in the valley organising for the Lourdes pilgrimage in July! Coinciding with these groups was another touch of Providence.

Playing running pictionary on the Saturday night after supper at the Swan was a big highlight! Feeling full of God's love and gratitude toward the school for hosting us and being so accommodating.

We hope to do the “Listen” retreat again at the same time next year and encourage anyone who is interested to reach out to us via the Ampleforth Society team!
