Alongside his illustrious career, featuring a 34 year long service in the Royal Navy, Michael also served as Treasurer of the Ampleforth Society between 1989 and 2012. As a result of his hard work and commitment to the Ampleforth Society, Michael was awarded the position of honourary life vice-president of the Ampleforth Society.
