Ampleforth College Chess Triumph in 2020 Chess Championships
We are delighted to share that Ampleforth College's online chess team, featuring current students, staff and OAs, recently secured their first ever victory in the 2020 Chess Championships. Below is the match report, kindly provided by OA Peter Hornsby (T12).
A hastily assembled online Chess team was set up by current teacher Piers Butler as a result of the lockdown for staff, students and alumni of Ampleforth College, and this week they claimed their first ever victory over D’Ascanio Vintage from Italy!
Fronted by current Housemaster and Deputy Head Pastoral, former England Youth International Jon Mutton on the top board with support from Peter Hornsby (T12), Ronan Hunter-Blair (D 13) and Magnus Walker (T14), all played their part to pull off this exciting win.
This backs up previous strong results with highly respectable draws against York University and Morphy Chess Academy from the USA to place Ampleforth comfortably within the top 100 2020 Chess teams from around the world!
