Old Amplefordian Book - 'Empire of the Winds'
I am pleased to share the great news that Old Amplefordian Philip Bowring (A60) has recently published a new book entitled ‘Empire of the Winds: The Global Role of Asia’s Great Archipelago.’
Philip has spent most of his life living in Hong Kong working as a journalist covering east Asia, including for the Financial Times, Far Eastern Economic Review and International Herald Tribune. Since retiring from full-time journalism he has returned to history, the subject he studied at Cambridge after benefiting from four outstanding history teachers at Ampleforth: Tony Davidson, (Fr) Hugh Aveling, Tom Charles-Edwards and Brian Richardson. Philip thanks them all but Tony Davidson in particular.
In this book, Philip provides a history of the world's largest and most important archipelago and its adjacent coasts. He tells the story of the peoples and lands located at this crucial maritime and cultural crossroads, from its birth following the last Ice Age to today.
