Old Amplefordians Golf Club AGM

OAGC Spain

Nick North (O61), Honorary Secretary of the Old Amplefordians Golf Society, shares his review of the year.

The Society has had a successful year with much competitive golf at some terrific venues.  We have had a steady stream of new and younger members join the OAGC and there have been a couple of new courses added to the fixture list.

Halford Hewitt Cup 2023 - managed by Mark Whittaker (J86)
After a successful squad warm-up in Spain, we lost to Eton in the 1st round of the Halford Hewitt at Royal St Georges in very unlucky circumstances.  The result was 3-2, the final match going down the 19th.
It was tough to lose to Eton in such a close match but our luck will change and we will be back!
We did rather better in the Plate progressing to the Semi-Final where we lost to Bedford 2.5/0.5 who were the eventual winners. En route we had victories against Chigwell (2-1) Mill Hill (2-1) and Bishops Stortford (2.1)

Other Fixtures
All our Fixtures are played at superb venues against other schools and clubs. The North West and North East tours are particularly popular amongst Old Amplefordians of all ages, both from the golfing and social aspects.

Special mention should be made of the 2022 Autumn Meeting at Ganton organised by Christian Minchella (H94) who managed to pull in some 30 players. The weekend coincided with Fr Edward’s 90th birthday and we held a splendid dinner for him at the Club where both Robin Dyer, former Headmaster, and our President, John Gibbs (T61) gave wonderful speeches.

For the first time ever we have secured a day at the JCB Golf and Country Club at Uttoxeter by  kind permission of Lord Bamford (D63).  This promises to be a very enjoyable day for the Old Amplefordian Golf Society on a challenging course.
We also have an Invitational Day at the prestigious New Zealand Golf Club near Woking at which Old Amplefordians can invite friends.

Generally
On the strength of the commendable results at the Halford Hewitt and other Representative  matches, the Society has a high profile amongst the golfing fraternity. Any Society members with any golfing ability is most welcome to join for a modest annual subscription. Please contact the Honorary Secretary, Nick North on:  nicknorth43@gmail.com
