Spotlight on... The Old Amplefordian Golfing Society

OAGS

As part of a new series of sports features, this month we are pleased to introduce the Old  Amplefordian Golfing Society.

Founded in 1912, the OA Golfing Society welcomes members of all golfing abilities, with handicaps of existing members varying between scratch and approximately 28. Furthermore, every year the OA Golfing Society participates in a range of fixtures that are open to all members. Whilst previous opponents have included host clubs and other Old Boy sides such as Downside and Sedbergh, there are also a number of OA-only meetings.

The OA Golfing Society also enters five exciting representative competitions and there is a selection process for these teams. In previous years, competitions have included the Alba Trophy, the Dick Watson Trophy, and the hotly contested Halford Hewitt Cup.

The OA Golfing Society are fortunate to be able to play at some of the finest courses around including five that have held the Open Championship in previous years. The Society also has a youth fund which is used to subsidise the cost of some meetings for younger members and university students.

Want to get involved?

The upcoming Old Amplefordian Golf Day on the 5th of May offers a great opportunity to learn more about the Old Amplefordian Golfing Society and to play against current pupils from Ampleforth College. Should you be interested in participating in the OA Golf Day or have any other questions, please do get in touch with the OAGS’s Hon Secretary, Nick North via nopnorth@btinternet.com.
