Sports Round Up - December 2024

1st XV v Bradford

The College’s focus on sport has been well rewarded this term, with an outstanding Rugby XV and Girls Hockey season, which will go down as one to remember across the whole school.

Particular highlights at the junior end include the girls U13A Hockey Team, who have won or drawn over 75% of their 18 fixtures this season under the encouragement of Miss Edgar. The boys U14A XV saw the return of John Slingsby to the coaching staff and their 259 points scored this season bodes well for the future talent coming up through the school.

The girls’ 1st, 2nd and 3rd Hockey XIs have performed very well, with a highlight being the 2nd XI only conceding one fixture all term. The 1st XI had a very strong fixture list, with some notable victories, particularly against our northern Catholic rivals, snatching victory against Stonyhurst at the start of November.

The senior Rugby season has been one to take note of, with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XVs showing real strength and breadth throughout the term. The Willcox Scholars who joined us in September have certainly proved themselves on the pitch for the First XV whose season has been outstanding, winning 16 of their 19 fixtures played so far and qualifying for the Semi Final of the School’s Vase, when they will face King Edward’s School Birmingham on 1st March. With 567 points scored and only 223 conceded, this has been an extremely strong side. Dallaglio Match Ground has seen some huge victories this term, many without a single try scored against the Red and Black. We encourage OAs to turn out in force at the Semi Final of the Vase at Weston Road, to get behind the strongest season in years for the school.

“It has been an absolutely outstanding year for Will James’ side, arguably Ampleforth College’s best in decades. They signed off their Saturday action in style too, an outstanding 48-0 victory away from home at Giggleswick. They might have been favourites, but in testing conditions few could possibly have expected such a margin. It is a testament to the quality and the work rate of this Ampleforth College side though, who have had a season to remember and to be incredibly proud of.” - Next Gen XV, Top 5 Schools review 10th December 2024 You can find all fixtures and results by visiting : Ampleforth College | Sports Home
