AS Insights: Women in Business

Ampleforth College

The Ampleforth Society warmly invites its members to the latest Industry Insights event exploring the role of women in business today.

The event will be chaired by Philippa Jalland (M13), a member of the Society's London Committee, and will feature OA guest speakers Amelia Smith (A07), Natasha Power (A06), Lydia Wood (B12) and Georgina Olley (A05). The panellists will discuss their career journey from Ampleforth to present day, and debate what the future holds for their sectors.

Philippa Jalland (M13)
After her education at Ampleforth, Philippa went on to gain a Bachelor of Science degree at university in London before coming back to the valley where she spent two years as the Ampleforth Society Coordinator. This was followed by a moved back to London where she took up the position of Member Relations Manager at Invest Africa, a networking and events company for those investing in Africa. After two years, which coincided with the beginning of the pandemic, she re-assessed her transferable skills and in June 2020, Philippa started working ‘in the city’ running the Salesforce system, a customer relationship management tool, for a foreign exchange company. She is presently going through selection to join the reserve forces and plays first team hockey for a London club. 

Amelia Smith (A07)
After leaving Ampleforth in 2007 Amelia attended Edinburgh University where she studied Middle Eastern Studies.  She went on to do the GDL and LPC (law conversion course) in London and worked for five years at White & Case (an American law firm) both in London and Singapore where she specialised in equity capital markets transactions.  Since 2019,Amelia has worked in the equity capital markets execution team at Morgan Stanley in London.

Natasha Power (A06) 
After Ampleforth, Natasha studied Latin and Ancient Greek at Edinburgh from 2011 and went on to study law with BPP in Cambridge. After a year of work experience and a visit to Ampleforth's Monastery of Christ the Word in Zimbabwe, she worked in London for Walt Disney in the Digital Media Distribution department before training as an in house solicitor with the American entertainment company AEG Europe, who run The O2 and SSE arenas in London. She can now be found using her legal skills and knowledge of the charity sector in a Family Office and Private Equity Firm in Suffolk. 

Lydia Wood (B12)
After leaving Ampleforth, Lydia went on to do an art foundation course at Leeds College of Art for one year and then went to art school and did a bachelors degree in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University in London for three years. Since graduating Lydia has set up her own company - Art Kids ltd - which runs a series of art workshops for young children both in primary schools in London and in a setting during the holidays in North Yorkshire. These art workshops are taught by contemporary artists aiming to introduce young children to a diverse experience and education in contemporary art and artists. Alongside running Art Kids, Lydia is also a full time freelance artist.

Georgina Olley (A05)
After studying languages at Newcastle University, Georgina founded Studio Nomad, which helps businesses launch and grow their products and services online. Her mission is to develop exceptional online portals using flow focussed and holistic design practices. Georgina has a decade of experience in the design and start-up world having worked with a variety of companies from world renowned interior designers such as Alidad and Studio Alidad, Italian linen company Once Milano, artisan textiles and sustainable swimwear. Georgina has learnt what it takes to build, develop and grow a business from the ground up.
