The Ampleforth Society warmly invites its members to the latest Career Insight event exploring the recruitment and talent acquisition industry on Thursday 11 February at 6.45pm.

The event will be chaired by Ampleforth Society London Committee member, Philippa Jalland (M13), and will feature guest speakers Simon Harle (C98), Caroline May (A07), Daniel Kirkpatrick (B99), Philippa La Rosee (B11), Josh Waley (J12) and Damian Rhodes (friend of Ampleforth). The panellists will discuss their career journey from Ampleforth to present day, and debate what the future holds for the recruitment industry.

Further details of the panellists is below. Please complete the form at the bottom of this page to register.

Philippa Jalland (M13) After her education at Ampleforth, Philippa went on to gain a Bachelor of Science degree at University in London before coming back to the valley where she spent two years as the Ampleforth Society Coordinator. This was followed by a move back to London where she took up the position of Member Relations Manager at Invest Africa, a networking and events company for those investing in Africa. After two years, which coincided with the beginning of the pandemic, she re-assessed her transferable skills and in June 2020, Philippa started working ‘in the city’ running the Salesforce system, a customer relationship management tool, for a foreign exchange company. She is presently going through selection to join the reserve forces and plays first team hockey for a London club.

Simon Harle (C98) Simon founded talent management JUNCTION in 2019 to bring a new approach to the way talent is managed in the communications industry. A lot of his inspiration has been drawn from the sporting world  identifying talent at grassroots level through to elite athletes. Starting his career in marketing agencies he switched 12 years ago to dedicate his time to working with agencies and brands to attract the right talent and vice versa working with people to help shape their career path. Simon has worked in-house for a leading comms agency, Iris, where he was responsible for identifying and on boarding talent for their London HQ. Whilst on this journey, he was lucky enough to help them open other offices across Europe, China and South America. Prior to launching JUNCTION he spent five years working at the Grace Blue Partnership, a global exec search firm. After giving so much to them as a business, he realised he had to jump and set up on his own to progress further.

Caroline May (A07) is Managing Director of Marcilly Recruitment, a boutique recruitment agency who specialise in business and private support recruitment. She works closely with clients from all sectors to ensure top quality candidates and the right fit for the business to ensure a long term solution. To demonstrate this they offer competitive rates and industry leading guarantees. Caroline started her career as an EA and went on to work in Operations in the Middle East so she is able to correctly identify strong candidates and fully understands what is required of someone working in a support role.

Daniel Kirkpatrick (B99) After leaving Ampleforth, Dan completed a BA in Economics specialising in Finance followed by an MSc in Social Research Methods and Statistics, both at the University of Manchester. After finishing his MSc he was at a crossroads – PhD or join the workplace. Despite still not knowing exactly what he wanted to do as a career, the workplace won and he fell into a role with JAM Recruitment. Seventeen years’ later, he’s still with JAM so the right decision was made. During his time with JAM he’s progressed from a Trainee Consultant through to Group Director and has undertaken a number of business management roles in between, including running JAM’s recruitment process outsourcing division with a turnover of c£15m. In addition to his work with JAM, his current role as Group Director includes working closely with JAM’s CEO on his two property businesses. Dan has also, with support from JAM’s CEO, recently set up a new company, Hunter, which offers an alternative talent solution to a traditional recruitment agency.

Philippa La Rosee (B11) is an Associate Consultant at Wessex Partners and works across the structured finance practice. She focuses primarily on direct lending, special situations, credit investing, financial sponsor coverage, leveraged finance and capital market searches across Europe and the US. Prior to joining Wessex Partners, Philippa worked at Winmark, where she managed relations with senior HR Directors of FTSE 100 and 250 companies, and Finance Directors of SMEs. Philippa graduated with a first class degree in History from the University of Manchester. She is a native German speaker and is also proficient in French.

Josh Waley (J12) Most recently, Josh was an Associate at MWM Consulting, a Board advisory and executive search boutique in London. He is experienced in both executive and non-executive search, with coverage across a range of practices from CFO and HR to Chair and Board. This has involved working with FTSE100 and equivalent listed companies as well as privately-held and PE-owned business across the UK and Continental Europe. He has worked with clients predominantly across financial services, consumer, industrial and in private equity. Previously, he worked for a boutique recruitment firm, Hanson Search, where he specialised in placements across financial PR and corporate communications for agency and in-house clients.

Damian Rhodes has over 20 years' recruitment and career advisory experience within both the UK and in Asia. He is now specialising in recruiting CFOs and Finance Directors predominantly within the insurance and tech industries.
