Ampleforth Chess Success!

Ampleforth Society

The Ampleforth College Chess team entered an online tournament in April 2020 during the first lockdown, set up by Peter Hornsby (T12) www.2020chess.com  which has seen them compete against top teams from all over the world in dozens of matches, and they have picked up several fantastic results recently as they continue to grow strength to strength in this new season.

The team is fronted on the top board by Jon Mutton, the Deputy Head Pastoral and former England Youth International, with Maths teacher Piers Butler organizing the students’ participation alongside OAs including Digby Walker (T11), Thomas Parr (B 04), Magnus Walker (T14), Henry Kirk (D16), Roland Walker (T13) and several others.

In December they prevailed in a thrilling encounter against a French team, and they followed this up with a very credible draw against Trinity College Dublin who featured a titled player. Ampleforth were 5-2 down at one point, and fought back to stage a remarkable comeback against their much higher rated opponents:

These results have moved them up to a very respectable mid-table position in the World League which has over 120 teams, alongside and above many illustrious challengers:
