Old Amplefordian Cross Country Club
The Old Amplefordian Cross Country Club competes in various races throughout the year. These races include the Alumni Run, held in December at the Thames Hare and Hounds Running Club in Wimbledon, which has been running since 1954. The 5 mile course is on Wimbledon Common and is a shortened version of the Oxbridge Blues course. Ampleforth have taken part in this race since 2006 and have maintained a strong team performance, coming 2nd in 2009 and 2011 and winning the event in 2010.
There is also the traditional Corbould Cup held at Ampleforth at the beginning of January against the School’s 1st XIII, which is always an exciting and closely fought event hosted by the school and attended by nearly 30 Old Amplefordians. The course is approximately 4.5 miles on the old match course.
Throughout the year a number of club members also compete in fell races. The highlight of the running season is the Three Peaks Fell Race held at the end of April at Horton in Ribblesdale, Yorkshire; a 24 mile course involving climbs up Pen Y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.
For the more intrepid there are also a number of walking trips, often to the Lake District but also to the French Alps and the Pyrenees. The Old Amplefordian Cross Country Club always welcomes new members.
